Costumes and Props
In Syrtos dance, the traditional costumes vary a lot over the different regions. The most commonly seen costumes include the men wearing a short tunic, pleated white skirt, knee high stockings, open-neck shirt and trimmed vest, and a long tie belt with tassels coming down. The women wear ankle length dresses, ornamented tunic cloak, decorated apron and a colorful scarf with coins on it.
The only prop that is sometimes used in Syrtos dance is a scarf or handkerchief . It is often held between the leader's hand, and the second in line's hand, so that the leader has more freedom to do complex turns and moves, and not fall down. In some variation of the Syrtos dance, all participants are connected via handkerchiefs. The typical manner of holding the handkerchief by the second person in line is: Lay half of the handkerchief over the outstretched fingers of the R hand, thumb up.
